..Or North Macedonia, as it is now known (not to be confused with Macedonia in Greece) has certainly yet to appear on most Eurotrippers’ radar. A hilly, forested country, with Northern Macedonia you can explore the quirky capital Skopje, where the old bazaar is a must-see.

But the highlight of Northern Macedonia is definitely Lake Ohrid, on the border with Albania. You walk through the charming old town before reaching the water, with historic mosques and churches side-by-side. The water is absolutely clear and in the summer, the perfect temperature.

If you fancy a bite, you can relax at one of the lakeside restaurants, and if you don’t fancy getting wet, hitch a ride on a submarine from the docks. A panoramic view of the lake can be seen from the hilltop fortress, and on the other side, the cliffside Church of St John.
