… or North Macedonia, as it is now known (not to be confused with Macedonia in Greece) has certainly yet to appear on most Eurotrippers’ radar. A hilly, forested country, you can explore the quirky capital Skopje, where the old bazaar is a must-see.

But the highlight is definitely Lake Ohrid, on the border with Albania. You walk through the charming old town before reaching the water, with historic mosques and churches side-by-side. The water is absolutely clear and in the summer, the perfect temperature.

If you fancy a bite, you can relax at one of the lakeside restaurants, and if you don’t fancy getting wet, hitch a ride on a submarine from the docks. A panoramic view of the lake can be seen from the hilltop fortress, and on the other side, the cliffside Church of St John.
