From the capital of Bulgaria, Sofia, it’s possible to organise day excursions to places like the Eyes of God, a large cavern pierced by two large peeping holes that looks like it belongs on a heavy metal album cover; and the iconic, UFO-shaped Buzludja monument, the former seat of the ruling communist party now laying in ruins.

Further east, nested among green hills, valleys and ravines of Bulgaria, is the historic capital of Veliko Tarnivo. Walking through the quaint old town, you’ll truly feel as though you’ve stepped in the past, while the views over the Assen dynasty monument are unmissable. Again, the free tour here is highly recommended.

Other highlights include the Tsarevets fortress towered over by a church, the inside of which was renovated during communist times and now looks rather like a comic book.
