Frankfurt Airport (FRA)
Frankfurt Airport (FRA) is one of Europe’s busiest hubs, serving as a major gateway for Lufthansa and Star Alliance airlines. Here is a guide to navigating the airport, its services, and transportation options:
1. Terminals and Navigation
- Terminals: The airport has two main passenger terminals:
- Terminal 1: The larger terminal, primarily used by Lufthansa and its Star Alliance partners. It is divided into Concourses A, B, C, and Z.
- Terminal 2: Used by many other international airlines, including SkyTeam and Oneworld members. It is divided into Concourses D and E.
- Transfer Between Terminals:
- The terminals are connected by the free SkyLine train (monorail), which runs every few minutes and takes about two minutes.
- There is also a free shuttle bus service between the terminals.
- Concourse Notes: Concourse Z gates are non-Schengen (international) and are on a higher level directly above the Schengen Concourse A gates.
2. Check-in, Security, and Transfers
- Arrival/Departure: Always check your flight information screens for the correct terminal and gate.
- Schengen/Non-Schengen:
- Flights within the Schengen Area are generally treated like domestic flights, with no passport control required when connecting.
- Flights arriving from or departing to Non-Schengen countries require passport control (immigration).
- Baggage Transfer:
- If you are on a single ticket with a connecting flight, your baggage is usually checked through to your final destination.
- If you are arriving from a non-Schengen country, you will generally clear Customs at FRA.
- If you are on separate tickets or switching between some airlines, you might need to collect your baggage and re-check it.
3. Services and Facilities
FRA offers a wide range of services for travelers:
- Wi-Fi: Free, unlimited Wi-Fi is available throughout the airport (look for “FRA Free WiFi”).
- Dining and Shopping: Extensive selections of shops, duty-free, restaurants, and bars are available in both terminals.
- Relaxation: The airport features:
- Quiet Zones / Leisure Zones: Areas with comfortable seating, sometimes with warm lighting and plants.
- Silent Chairs: Chairs with curved backrests for privacy, often with integrated speakers and charging ports.
- Yoga Rooms: Free, fully equipped rooms for stretching and relaxation (e.g., Terminal 1, C14-C16; Terminal 2, D1-D4).
- Lounges: Numerous airline-specific lounges (e.g., Lufthansa) and pay-per-use lounges like the LuxxLounge (Terminal 1, Landside) and Sky Lounge (Terminal 2, Airside). Showers are also available for a fee in some areas.
- Other Services: Information desks, currency exchange, ATMs, pharmacies, a 24-hour Medical Center/Airport Clinic (near T1, Hall A, ground level), luggage storage, and prayer rooms.
- Entertainment: Movie Worlds and Gaming Worlds for free entertainment, and an Open Air Deck (Terminal 1, above Gate B42) for fresh air and airfield views.
4. Transportation To/From the Airport
Frankfurt Airport has excellent transport links:
- Train Stations (Located at Terminal 1):
- Regional Train Station (Regionalbahnhof): Located on Level 0 of Terminal 1. Take S-Bahn lines S8 or S9 to reach Frankfurt Hauptbahnhof (Central Station) in about 11 minutes.
- Long-Distance Train Station (Fernbahnhof): Connected to Terminal 1 by a pedestrian bridge. This station services high-speed and intercity trains (Deutsche Bahn – DB) to cities across Germany and Europe.
- Bus: Bus stops are located outside both terminal buildings. Various lines connect the airport to Frankfurt and the surrounding region.
- Taxi: Taxi stands are available outside the arrivals areas of both terminals, operating 24/7. The trip to central Frankfurt typically takes 20-30 minutes.
- Car Rental: Rental car services are available in both terminals.
