The Alpine Mirror: A Guide to Lake Oeschinensee

|
Hidden high above the village of Kandersteg in the Bernese Oberland, Lake Oeschinensee is frequently cited as the most beautiful mountain lake in Switzerland. It isn’t just the turquoise water that draws people in; it’s the dramatic amphitheater of 3,000-meter peaks—including the Blüemlisalp, Oeschinenhorn, and Fründenhorn—that surge directly out of the shoreline.
Nature and Formation
Oeschinensee is a UNESCO World Heritage site, and for good reason. It sits at an elevation of 1,578 meters and was formed by a prehistoric massive rockfall which blocked the path of the glacial streams, creating a natural dam.
Unlike many Alpine lakes that are fed purely by surface runoff, Oeschinensee is fed by several glacial brooks. Curiously, it has no visible surface outlet; the water drains through an underground limestone passage before emerging lower down in the Kander valley.
Seasonal Highlights
Whether you visit during the lush green of summer or the crystalline silence of winter, the lake offers two distinct personalities:
Summer: The Blue Jewel
From May to October, the lake is a hub for hikers and nature lovers.
-
Boating: You can rent classic wooden rowboats to explore the deeper, darker blue sections of the lake.
-
The Rodelbahn: Near the mountain station, a 750-meter summer toboggan run offers a high-speed descent with views of the peaks.
-
Swimming: Be warned—even in mid-August, the water temperature rarely exceeds 20°C. It’s a refreshing (read: bracing) dip for the brave.
Winter: The Frozen Giant
When the lake freezes over, it becomes a literal playground.
-
Ice Fishing: Oeschinensee is one of the few places in Switzerland where ice fishing for Arctic char and trout is a major winter tradition.
-
Winter Hiking: Groomed paths allow you to walk directly across the frozen surface, surrounded by ice-draped cliffs.
Essential Hiking Trails
To truly see the “Glow” of the water, you need to gain some elevation.
| Trail Name | Difficulty | Highlights |
| The Panorama Hike (8a) | Moderate | The classic loop. Offers the iconic “bird’s-eye view” of the entire lake. |
| Lakeshore Path | Easy | A flat, family-friendly walk from the cable car to the water’s edge. |
| Heuberg Lookout | Moderate | Spectacular views of the hanging glaciers and waterfalls. |
Getting There
-
To Kandersteg: Take the train (SBB) from Bern or Interlaken. The ride through the Kandertal valley is a scenic event in itself.
-
To the Lake: From the Kandersteg train station, it’s a 15-minute walk to the Oeschinen Cable Car.
-
The Final Stretch: Once you exit the gondola at the top, it is a pleasant 25-minute walk through pine forests to reach the shore. An electric shuttle bus is available for those with limited mobility.
Pro Tip: Visit during the “shoulder season” (early June or late September) to avoid the midday crowds. If you can, stay for the “Alpenglow” at sunset when the limestone peaks turn a fiery orange, reflecting perfectly in the still water.
