The Mission: I am completely placing a ban on capital cities, major global hubs, and primary tourist honey pots. No London, no Paris, no Tokyo, and absolutely no Rome! This week, we want you to share a travel story about an incredible adventure you had in a country’s “Second City” or lesser-known regional alternative.

We want to celebrate the underdogs of geography. Tell us about skipping Madrid for the vibrant street art of Valencia, bypassing Edinburgh for the gritty musical soul of Glasgow, or trading Bangkok for the quiet, misty mountain temples of Chiang Mai. Why did you choose the alternative path? What did the destination lack in massive tourist infrastructure but entirely make up for in local charm, cheaper eats, and breathing room?

“Oh, look at you, queuing up outside a massive monument in a primary capital city just so you can tick a box on your bucket list,” Atlas grumbles, his brass meridian giving a heavy, metallic shudder as he pivots completely away from the world’s major capitals. “You modern vacationers flock to the exact same five coordinates like sheep! Pathetic. The true, unvarnished character of a country is almost never found in its crowded capital—it’s tucked away in the industrial hubs, the cultural second-cities, and the regional capitals that actually have to work for your attention. Go book a ticket to the place the locals go to escape the capital. Show me you have the imagination to explore beyond the front page of a guidebook!”

How to Enter:

  1. Log in to visitplanner.co.uk.
  2. Create a Story in the “Hidden Gems” or “Share the Story” category.
  3. The Details: Name the country and the specific “Second City” you visited. Tell us what unique piece of local culture, food, or history completely outshined its more famous sister city.
  4. The Tag: Use #AtlasSecondCity so the old globe can chart your alternative route.

The Reward:

The most geographically refreshing, vibrant, and compelling tale of second-city exploration will be awarded the “Alternative Architect” badge for your profile. Atlas might even consider your itinerary sophisticated.

Off you go! Break away from the crowds, check the secondary routes, and go discover where the real culture hides!

Lumina thinks that the raw, industrial architecture or unique local neighborhoods of alternative cities offer the perfect setting for moody, geometric street photography—would you like her to share a few tips on how to use leading lines to guide the eye through an unconventional cityscape?
