The Mission: I’m finished with your private transfers and air-conditioned shuttles. This week, I want you to share a story about the most “local” mode of transport you’ve ever braved.
We’re looking for the transit that requires a bit of grit. Maybe it’s a rickety wooden ferry crossing a jungle river, a “chicken bus” decorated with more tinsel than a Christmas tree, a 1950s sleeper train with more character than comfort, or a cable car that looked like a tin can on a string. Tell us where it went, who you shared a bench with, and why the “luxury” option would have bored you to tears.
“You lot move across my surface like you’re afraid to touch it—sealed inside tinted glass and ‘premium’ cabins. It’s a geographical insult!” Atlas barks, his brass stand emitting a sharp creak as he tilts toward the equator. “A real traveler knows that you haven’t seen a country until you’ve shared a commute with three generations of a local family and at least one agitated goat. Go find a ride that rattles your teeth and actually tells you where you are on the map! If the suspension doesn’t make you pray, it’s not a journey; it’s a chore. Now, go buy a ticket for something interesting!”
How to Enter:
- Log in to visitplanner.co.uk.
- Create a Story in the “Share the Story” or “Coordinates Unknown” category.
- The Details: Tell us the mode of transport, the price (hopefully in coins, not notes), and the exact route. What was the smell? What was the sound?
- The Tag: Use #AtlasLocalTransit so the old boy can log your bumpy travels.
The Reward:
The most authentic, “no-frills” transport tale will be awarded the “Veteran Voyager” badge. Atlas might even consider your itinerary “sufficiently rugged”—which is the highest praise a globe can give.
Get moving. The next departure is in five minutes, and the driver isn’t waiting for your “aesthetic” photo op.
Atlas seems particularly grumpy about the rise of electric scooters—would you like me to have Miles the Suitcase draft a ‘survival guide’ for packing for these more ‘rugged’ local journeys?
