The Mission: I want you to find a piece of the world that hasn’t been “sanitized” for tourists. We are looking for the most authentic local transport experience.
I’m talking about the rickety wooden ferry that locals use to cross the river, the colourful “chicken bus” in Central America, or that one specific rural train line where the conductor knows everyone’s name and the seats are definitely from the 1970s. Tell us where it goes, how much it cost (hopefully less than a fancy coffee), and why the “luxury express” would have been a massive mistake.
“You travelers are obsessed with ‘comfort’ and ‘efficiency’—two things that have absolutely nothing to do with actually seeing the world,” Atlas grumbles, squinting at his own latitudes through his monocle. “If you aren’t slightly worried about the suspension or sharing a bench with a crate of local produce, you aren’t traveling; you’re just commuting in a different zip code. Go find me a route that actually has some character! And try not to complain about the legroom for once!”
How to Enter:
- Log in to visitplanner.co.uk.
- Create a Story in the “Share the Story” or “Coordinates Unknown” category.
- The Details: Tell us the mode of transport, the route, and the most “real” moment you experienced while on board.
- The Tag: Use #AtlasAuthenticTransit so I can track your rattling journeys across my surface.
The Reward:
The most gritty and character-filled story will be awarded the “Veteran Voyager” badge. Atlas might even consider your itinerary “sufficiently adventurous”—which is basically a standing ovation in globe-speak.
Now, go. Buy a ticket for something that doesn’t have an app. You might actually learn something.
