Right, unclick the latches and pop the lid. If you’re heading out to southern Jordan to explore the Rose City, you’re going to need to pack smart. Petra isn’t a stroll around a tidy museum; it’s an ancient desert basin filled with 2,000-year-old rock-cut canyons, loose scree, scorching afternoon sun, and crisp desert nights.
Take it from a seasoned piece of luggage: if you overpack the wrong gear, you’ll feel every unnecessary gram. Here is what belongs inside your compartment before you roll out.
Footwear: No Pristine White Trainers
Leave the fashion sneakers at home unless you want them permanently tinted salmon-pink. Petra’s sandstone is notoriously soft, powdery, and everywhere.
- Broken-in hiking shoes or sturdy trail runners: You’ll easily log 15 to 25 kilometers a day between the Siq, the Royal Tombs, and the 800 stone steps up to Ad-Deir (The Monastery). Grip is non-negotiable.
- Merino wool hiking socks: Pack 2–3 pairs. Wool cushions the impact on ancient stone paths, wicks sweat when the canyon heats up, and keeps your feet blister-free.
- Camp slides or slip-ons: For when you finally get back to your room in Wadi Musa and need to let your feet breathe.
Clothing: The Desert Layering System
The desert climate is a master of contrast. Dawn can be biting and breezy, midday will test your heat tolerance, and evenings drop quickly into single digits.
- Breathable linen or lightweight merino shirts: Long sleeves protect against fierce UV radiation and respect local cultural norms around modest dress.
- Tough, loose-fitting trekking trousers: Climbing high mountain steps and perching on rough canyon ledges will shred flimsy fabrics.
- A packable down jacket or fleece: If you plan on doing Petra by Night or an early 6:00 AM walk through the Siq, you will be shivering without a proper insulating layer.
- A lightweight cotton scarf or Shemagh: Buy one locally or pack your own. It shields your neck from the sun, keeps the stinging desert wind off your face, and rolls up to take almost zero packing space.
Daypack Essentials: Inside the Carry-On Pocket
You don’t want to drag your full kit through the narrow gorges. Pack a small, packable 15–20L daypack inside your main compartment for daily excursions.
- A 2-litre hydration bladder or sturdy canteen: Desert air dries you out long before you realize you’re sweating. Tap water isn’t recommended for drinking, so keep a solid, refillable vessel ready.
- High-SPF sunscreen and polarised sunglasses: Sandstone canyon walls reflect blinding sunlight straight back at you from every conceivable angle.
- Heavy-duty power bank: Between shooting high-resolution footage of the Treasury and navigating GPS trails, your phone battery will drain double-time under the desert heat.
- Cash (Jordanian Dinars): Bedouin stalls throughout the site sell mint tea, fresh pomegranate juice, and handmade crafts, but card readers out past the Colonnaded Street are practically non-existent.
Pack it all snug, keep your heavy items close to the wheels, and zip it tight—Petra’s ancient dust waits for no one. Safe travels on the trail!
